The value of an apple a day: It’s not just wordplay!

We’ve all heard the “apple a day” saying, and while many people don’t eat an apple every single day, it shouldn’t be hard to get a few servings of any kind of fruit each day, right? Well, a recent nationwide survey from Humana, one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies, found that only 14 percent of Americans eat 3-5 servings of fruit per day! Yikes… 

It gets worse; the study states that one third of Americans do not eat fruit as part of their overall diet. Philip Painter, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Humana’s Health Guidance Organization describes this behavior as “alarming” and calls on Americans to “take those small, meaningful steps, for example, ordering water instead of soda or picking up an apple as a snack”. Nurse with Apple

Hmm, it appears the “apple a day” saying is not just a saying after all! So why is it that apples get all the love? What causes health professionals to refer to apples before other fruits? One of the main reasons is likely their high fiber content, which helps individuals maintain a healthy weight.

A recent article (cleverly titled “An Apple a Day Melts the Pounds Away!”) outlines how crowding out unhealthy foods with healthy ones is arguably the best ways to lose weight. Since fiber is largely indigestible, high fiber foods like apples fill you up more than alternatives with similar calorie levels. Fiber can also help slow down digestion, giving you a steady source of energy, rather than a spike followed by a crash. 

It’s not just the fiber content that makes apples such a perfect choice, though; a 2008 study lauds apples’ nutritional content, and outlines the strong link between apple products and beneficial health effects against cardiovascular disease, asthma, pulmonary dysfunction, diabetes, obesity and cancer. The value of high polyphenol and antioxidant content of apples is also discussed, and the positive effects of antioxidants (which are enhanced in Arctic® Apples by the way) are also discussed in a recent article of ours as well.

There is a old saying "an apple a day, keeps the doctor away" and this is true. Apple has tremendous health benefits and it cuts the risk of many diseases. Apple consists of fibre that is helpful in bowel movement. So people who want to loose weight can take apple as snacks. It prevents dementia and the risk of cancer. It contains antioxidants and vitamin C that is good for skin. So eat apples instead of junk food.
