A juicy trend towards healthier beverages

Health-conscious consumers are increasingly keeping an eye out for innovative new products that help them get more of what they want (convenience, great taste), and less of what they don’t (empty calories, additives).

Drinkable ways of achieving these objectives is no exception, and we all know that of 5+ servings of fruits and veggies can play a crucial role. But, this is can challenging for many people, especially considering the average U.S. consumer gets less than half that many servings!Arctic Granny Smoothie

Beverage Industry Magazine published a comprehensive analysis of beverage trends earlier this month, and their article identified some interesting trends. Per the title, “Juice smoothies, flavor innovations trending in juice category”, which is great news because this shift appears to be tied to reduced interest in sugary, carbonated beverages.

Consumer demand for blended juices with multiple fruits and vegetables are on the rise thanks to concern for nutritional intake. An especially popular technique emerging is combining healthful vegetables such as spinach or kale with fruit juices (like apple!) for sweetness.

Even with healthy, blended juices trending up, the rise of juice smoothies is even more notable. The number of juice-smoothie-consumers has nearly doubled over the past six years and that number continues growing.

Better still, both of these trends are about to get another boost, thanks to the Arctic Advantage™!

For blended juices, apples can sometimes be seen as an unwelcome partner. After all, the enzymatic browning reaction that occurs when apples are bitten, sliced or bruised occurs in grand style when apples are juiced. This means that, without coloring or other additives, apples tend to turn whatever beverage they’re a part of mud-brown. Yuck…

Of course, nonbrowning Arctic® apples means nonbrowning juices, so not only will Arctic® apple varieties retain their own unique color and flavor, they won’t overpower vibrant reds, greens or other hues that are clearly preferable to mud-brown.

The Arctic Advantage™ holds true for smoothies (an area where apples are shamefully rare), and goes one step further! Because they don’t require acidic anti-browning solutions (or ones that carry allergy concerns), Arctic® apple smoothies have no problem teaming up with dairy ingredients which curdle in the presence of.

Better-for-you beverages are no passing fad (it’s not like anyone is expecting a “worse-for-you” beverage trend to take off). Arctic® apples can help processors and consumers enjoy drinks that aren’t just better for your health, they’re also more appealing, versatile and convenient!
