Back to reality with back to school lunches

As a mom of two school-aged children I’m definitely not ready to write about this yet – but backpacks and notepads have clearly taken over the aisles that were once filled with pool floaties and sand toys. Summer is officially coming to an end and it’s time to start getting ready for back to school. And with every school day brings the chore of having to figure out what to pack for school lunches. Here’s a few tips to help make the transition from beach picnics to brown paper bags a bit easier.

New Gear: Back to school shopping gets kids excited about the year ahead and getting to see their friends again. Let them be a part of the process and bring them along to the store with you to help pick out a new lunch kit. According to a study from Cornell University, cartoon characters can actually encourage healthier eating. If opening up a lunch kit with the latest superhero on the outside gets my kids excited about eating the fruits and vegetables inside, then I’m all for it!

Get the Kids Involved: Packing school lunches is a chore that your children can easily help with or do completely on their own if they are old enough, and there are plenty of reasons why children should get involved. Getting to pick out their own food will give them a sense of responsibility and ensure that the choices are something that they are actually going to eat while they’re at school, instead of coming back home untouched at the end of the day. Just make sure to set some guidelines about what foods can and can’t be included in a healthy school lunch.

Keep It Healthy – And Fun: Giving your kids a healthy lunch is important to help fuel them with enough energy to get through the long school days. Arctic® apples fresh cut slices are perfect for school lunches. They’re already cut and ready to go making them super convenient. Plus, their unique nonbrowning trait means you can make lunches the night before and they’ll still be fresh come lunch time. Throw in a yogurt or fruit dip to make it more fun for the kids! Our Arctic® wraps are also a delicious twist to a traditional sandwich to help keep things interesting.
