It’s officially summer – my favourite time of year! The sun is out, the skies are blue, and I get to listen to the sounds of my kids laughing and splashing in the pool. The afternoons and evenings are filled with friends on the deck doing what summers are made for – barbecuing! Nothing quite beats the taste of a good barbecue. Many people don’t think of including fruit on the grill but Arctic® apples are extremely versatile and pack a sweet punch to your favorite summer recipes.
If you’re looking for some great BBQ inspiration make sure to follow us on Pinterest, we’re always adding to our Apples Over the Fire board. You’ll find ideas on there ranging from apple, berry and brie turkey sliders to bacon wrapped apple pork kabobs to campfire apple crisp. Feeling hungry yet?
Another great healthy summer option is salads, and one of the initiatives we love to sponsor here at Okanagan Specialty Fruits is Tour de Fresh which helps put salad bars in schools. Salads are the perfect summer eat when its often too hot out to feel hungry, and can easily become a meal all on their own. One of our favourite salads is our Arctic® Red, White, and Blue Salad. Variations to the recipe can easily be made by grilling the apple slices first, and adding in some BBQ chicken is also a great way of adding in some more protein. It’s perfect for upcoming Canada Day and 4th of July celebrations!
If you’re a barbecue newbie the outdoor grill can definitely be a bit intimidating. Trust me – I’ve gotten a call from the neighbour before telling me that there was a cloud of smoke coming out of a silver object on my deck! There are a lot of factors that play a role in making the perfect BBQ meal – from temperature and marinades, or if you’re like me how to even turn the thing on! This article from Jamie Oliver offers their top 10 tips on how to become a master of the grill.
