Healthy trails to you!

I spent much of this past fall on the road and in the air meeting with people to talk about apples, agriculture, and science. While I love the opportunity to see new places and meet with people, it can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle while traveling regularly. I’ve gone in search of tips for healthy travel and included some that I have already put into practice, for you to peruse.

  • Pack Travel Snacks – The extra large (and extra expensive) bags of candy tend to catch my eye. I avoid them by packing my own snacks, so I have a better option on hand and save money while I’m at it! I’ll pack single serving containers of nuts, and chopped or fresh veggies and fruit (like Arctic® apple slices!). The Biting Truth blog suggests finding a supermarket when you arrive so you can pick up healthy snacks like fruit, whole grain crackers, and canned tuna.
  • Stay hydrated – Airplanes are notorious for leaving you parched. Luckily, many airports now offer water bottle filling stations by their water fountains, though you can always buy a bottle if need be as well. If I’m short on space or only going on a short trip I will use my travel coffee mug for both water or coffee, just don’t forget to empty it before you head through security!
  • Make Hotel Workouts Work – Sometimes the hotel gym isn’t what you’d hoped for, or you just don’t feel like leaving your room. I work with this by bringing an exercise band with me for resistance training, and I access yoga programs through an app to help stretch away any flight related soreness.
  • Choose Healthy Options at Restaurants – This is where I struggle, so I looked to online advice from dietitians to guide me. Dietitian Karen Ansel recommends a breakfast of scrambled eggs with fresh fruit, and keeping supper simple by ordering meals with chicken or fish and veggies. Fruits & Veggies – More Matters® suggests ordering a veggie soup or salad with a sandwich (with extra veggies if you can!) for a simple, healthy lunch and note that a stir fry or fajita entrée are often great ways to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables.

My 2018 travel resolution will be to focus on filling half my plate with fruits and veggies no matter where I am! Do you have a healthy living resolution in mind, for travel or otherwise? I hope your future travel plans are full of health and fun!
