For years to come, we may look back at 2017 as the biggest year in the history of the Arctic® brand. Why? This is the year that nonbrowning Arctic® apples hit stores for the first time ever!
This isn’t to say that 2016 wasn’t a “fruitful” year for us as well; the very first commercial harvest of Arctic® Goldens and the USDA approval of our Arctic® Fuji variety were major milestones without a doubt. However, twenty years after Okanagan Specialty Fruits’ founders Neal and Louisa Carter first dreamed up the idea of nonbrowning apples that could reduce food waste and boost consumption, there’s nothing that can top finally sharing them with apple lovers in stores.
In 2016, we worked hard to ready ourselves for this year’s market introduction. We completed more consumer research, deciding on the first ever Arctic® apple product form (fresh, ready to eat Arctic® Golden slices!), developing packaging, planting more trees, and of course, growing the fruit itself.
In a year of so much progress as well as self-reflection over the journey that brought us here, we knew we wanted Arctic® apples to hit stores with a logo that’s fresh and modern. At the same time, we didn’t want to lose the identity and imagery of our original logo, especially since it came from the same origins as Arctic® apples themselves – the Carter family.
As a quick backstory, and in case you’ve wondered why the name “Arctic® apples” was chosen: Once the development of nonbrowning apple varieties was underway, OSF founder Neal Carter set to work brainstorming a proper name for these apples that would be strong, symbolic and descriptive. With the help of his family members, the name “Arctic” was determined to be an excellent fit because, like the snow-driven landscapes from which they draw their name, the flesh of Arctic® apples is fresh, crisp and pristine.
We feel great about the new look, because it retains these same elements, with a bit more of a bold, clean, and eye-catching appearance. We’re pleased to formally introduce our logo to the world, and soon, Arctic® apples themselves in test markets!
