Parents everywhere, myself included, breathed a heavy sigh of relief when they unzipped the lunch kit on the last day of school – two months off from making the dreaded school lunch! But the celebration is short-lived when you quickly realize that now you have two whole months to figure out how to keep the kids entertained over the summer break.
There are lots of fun ways to incorporate some education and healthy snacks into your summer plans, and here are some of our top tips on how to survive the summer break and avoid having ice cream for every meal (not that there’s anything wrong with that as a treat once in awhile)!
Interactive learning: Just because school’s out doesn’t mean kids can’t keep learning (and you too)! Summer is the perfect time to teach your kids about how the fruits and vegetables they eat every day end up in your home. Take them to an orchard that allows them to pick the fruit right off the trees themselves, go to a farmer’s market and let them pick a new fruit or vegetable to try for that week, or spend some time with them in your garden and let them help take care of it. These interactive activities will make learning fun and help your children develop a love for healthy eating.
Heat things up: Kids love helping in the kitchen. A great way to spend the morning together is to bake an apple pie and let your child create the design for the lattice-top. Smoothies are the perfect healthy snack for the summer. Try our Arctic® Granny Smoothie and let the kids experiment with the recipe by adding in some of their other favorite fruits.
Keep it old school: Get rid of the electronics for the summer (ok, maybe just try to help them cut down at least!) and show your kids how we played back in the “olden” days. Think Red Rover, potato-sack jumping, and three-legged races. One of our favorite oldies but goodies is to throw some Arctic® apples in a bucket of water and go bobbing for them. It’s a great way to cool down on those hot days and you’ll be surprised how much fun the kids will have competing against you!
Road trip ready: It’s always fun to get away at some point during the summer break but with every road trip with kids comes those four dreaded words – are we there yet?! Preparation is key when traveling with children so make sure to have lots of healthy snacks on hand that you can easily pass to the back seat when they get hungry and will prevent the need for frequent stops. Arctic® apples come pre-sliced in grab ‘n go bags making them the perfect road trip snack!
We hope these tips bring some new activity ideas to your summer plans and help create some fun memories with your little ones. If you’re still struggling to survive the summer break our last tip is just for the parents – use fruit as a garnish to your favorite cocktail!
