Shopping for apples? What makes you decide?

Recently, we discussed which apple attributes consumers told us were most important to them. We weren’t surprised to find things like flavor and nutrition among the top choices, but how can shoppers identify these attributes while in the grocery store? The truth is they can’t! So, we asked 1,000 self-identified apple consumers how they choose one apple over another. What did we learn? Arctic® apples enhance the traits most important to shoppers!

It’s been well known for a long time that consumers “buy” first with their eyes, and not surprisingly they rated the most eye-catching attribute as most important – the apple’s color and shine. Since Arctic® apples don’t show the superficial bruising or blemishes that can mar an otherwise perfect apple, they will show consumers more of the apple’s true color and look as great as they taste! Apple Traits Shoppers Look For

Freshness and quality were next on the list of what consumers look for when buying apples. This certainly makes sense, as nobody would intentionally choose an apple that appears old or damaged with better options available, but it can often be tough to judge. While Arctic® fruits won’t show superficial blemishes or bruising, meaningful damage and rot will still be evident. This means consumers can more easily tell bad apples from those which are fresh and high quality.

Fruit crispness and firmness ranked third on the list. You want your apples to be nice and crisp, but can’t exactly take a big bite in the store! Still, when conventional apples are bruised between the tree and you, their cells are broken down by the browning reaction, resulting in an unappealing, mushy texture. The nonbrowning trait protects these cells and this Arctic Advantage™ gives you the eating experience you’re after!

This feedback from apple-eaters confirms for us that Arctic® apples will offer consumers more of what they love about their favourite fruit. With these advantages, it’s no wonder that the vast majority of shoppers were interested in buying them once they’re available!
