Showdown: Arctic® Golden vs. Arctic® Granny

The first two nonbrowning apple varieties we are bringing to market are Arctic® Granny and Arctic® Golden. Why these varieties? Lots of reasons!

Golden Delicious:

Arctic GoldenOrange Pippin, a popular website which is a self-acclaimed “comprehensive resource for apples and orchards”, explains that the Golden Delicious is “undoubtedly one of the most important apple varieties of the 20th century”. A key reason for this is Golden’s incredible versatility. They’re a delicious eating apple, work great in baking and salads, and are a favourite option for growers since they are typically easy to grow, produce lots of fruit, and store well.

The only thing preventing Golden Delicious from being even more popular is that their light skin accentuates minor surface bruising. Because of this, even superficial damage that doesn’t affect the fruit’s quality can result in apples being downgraded or passed over by consumers. This problem is remedied with the nonbrowning trait, however.

Golden Delicious is a very easy variety to love thanks to their amazing flavor profile, which has made them extremely popular around the rest of the world, too. A British consumer survey recently identified Golden Delicious as their #1 favourite variety. For an apple already so tasty and versatile, the nonbrowning Arctic® Golden will be especially valuable for consumers and growers alike!

Granny Smith:

Arctic GrannyAnother extremely versatile apple, Granny Smith works well in things like pies and sauce (if you don’t eat them all before you get a chance). In fact, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith are the only varieties to have perfect scores for every single category in Washington Apple Commission’s usage chart!

Granny Smith is also one of the oldest varieties around, and has a charming back-story that began when they were discovered in Australia in a pile of compost. These apples are well-known for their crisp, tart flavor, and are sought out by children and adults alike for their unique taste.

Speaking of their popularity, Granny Smith was ranked a close 2nd behind Golden Delicious in the British survey mentioned above, and also cracked Orange Pippin’s top-10 list. Orange Pippin also states that Granny Smiths are “the most instantly-recognized of all apples”. What we – and the Brits – are really saying is clearly you can’t go wrong with either variety!
